1. Our varieties of beetroot
- ‘Detroit Dark Red’ (deep red, sweet flavour).
- ‘Chioggia’ (striped pink and white flesh, decorative).
- ‘Golden Beet’ (yellow, milder flavour).
2. When to Sow
- Sowing Period: March to July.
- Early sowing: March–April (under cloches or fleece for protection).
- Main season: May–June (for summer and autumn harvests).
- Late sowing: July
3. Site and Soil Preparation
- Location: Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot (at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily)
4. Sowing Beetroot
-
Seed Preparation:
- Beetroot “seeds” are actually clusters containing multiple seeds. Soak seeds in warm water for 30 minutes before sowing to aid germination.
6. Harvesting
-
Timing:
- Baby beets: 7–10 weeks after sowing (roots golf ball-sized, 4–5cm diameter).
- Mature beets: 10–12 weeks after sowing (tennis ball-sized, 7–10cm diameter).
- Harvest from June to November, depending on sowing time
